A high school freshman who hit classmates with plastic pellets blown from a tube has been suspended and charged with assault in Virginia.
The school board upheld the suspension of Spotsylvania County High School student Andrew Mikel II after his father appealed.
The Washington Post reports the 14-year-old will be cleared of misdemeanor assault charges if he completes a yearlong diversion program.
Mark L. Cole, a state legislator, questioned the punishment, saying the district needs to use commonsense for a little mischief.
Principal Russell Davis wrote in an e-mail to other school officials that the district has an obligation to protect students from others who pose a threat to a safe learning environment.
