An Erie Homeowner who killed a home invader with an ornamental samurai sword will not be charged with the man’s death. The householder took an ornamental sword with him when he investigated a strange noise in the house. He found a stranger, Delvon Crockett, stealing items from the home. Crockett caused the man to fear for his life, so the homeowner stabbed Crockett in the heart with the sword in self defense. Police found Crockett’s body with his .380 pistol in hand when they arrived.
The Erie District attorney concluded yesterday that the actions of the homeowner didn’t rise to the level of criminal conduct. But, Crockett’s family believes that he was not caught in the act of a burglary, but was a murder victim. Crockett had an extensive criminal record. The family said that he was a good father and a caring guy. There is no explanation as to why Crockett was in the house that did not belong to him or why he was armed with a handgun while being there.
Here’s part of Crockett’s obituary…
“Delvon J. "Spud" Crockett, Sr., age 24, of Erie, departed this life on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. He was born in Erie on January 25, 1986... He was attending the Erie Institute of Technology for welding. He was a member of Second Baptist Church. "Spud" enjoyed working out, playing video games, writing and listening to music, playing and watching sports and he was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. He was a proud father and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His love, kindness and fun-spirited ways will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by…”
A Washington Burglar Was Shot By A Homeowner And ByThe Neighbor too.
This home invader was shot by his 75 year old victim this week in Carnation, Washington. It is believed that the intruder was a transient living in the adjoining woods. Vern Grant heard someone smashing the windows of his van. The burglar was rifling through Grant’s medications in the van and yelling.
The thug then went into Grant’s home through the back door and began trashing the house as he continued screaming incoherently. He then hit Grant in the head. Grant then shot the man once in self defense. The King County Sheriff’s Department believes that the intruder was hit by a second shot fired by a neighbor who came to Grant’s aid.
The home invader will be charged with burglary. Neither Grant nor the neighbor will be charged.
